HOM, Minneapolis, and Mary, You Have Spunk!

I am so happy to be going to Minneapolis, Minnesota, this week. The city is one of my personal top 10 favorite places. What is there not to love? There’s a great art community, fabulous food and happening shopping.
Hirshfield’s Paints is bringing HOM Furniture and our delicious Devine Color palettes to their design centers. You’ll see our colors on their walls.
When people are setting up a room, putting together old and new furniture, changing floors or counter tops, wall color is the largest and most challenging decision they must make. This is where we come in. Our colors are all about perfect color relationships with the natural surfaces in your home and your own furnishings.

I have to confess, I have a deep connection to Minneapolis for a very personal reason that goes way beyond color.
Mary Richards lived there. Okay, not really, but I really believed it when the “Mary Tyler Moore” show was on TV in the 70s. I so loved who she was, the life she had built for herself, and the people in her life. On the first day of her job, her boss, Mr. Grant, told her, “Mary, you have SPUNK.” And, as she grinned bigger than life, he finished his sentence with “I HATE spunk!”

Isn’t the best scene in the movie Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion, when they go to battle as to who is the “Mary” and who is the “Rhoda” in the friendship? Only to both accept in the end they can be both :) I certainly was both.
I cried the last episode in their last season. As they all hugged each other into a big hurdle, weeping, not wanting to let go, they all began moving as one big blob, to get a tissue for Mary. I imagined myself right in the middle, crying and my other-self laughing hysterically at the scene..
I hadn’t heard that line in a long time. But it was repeated recently by the boss to an employee on “STUDIO 60 on the Sunset Strip.” WOW! Isn’t this the hottest, comedy-drama-soap opera-pop culture-social commentary-political show a regular network has ever put out? I heard someone call it the “West Wing” of comedy. All I know is that it has SPUNK! You have to tune in. Then, I saw Ed Asner in the show, in yet another great role!

I read a rave review of Studio 60 and now hearing your review I’ll definitely check it out! I wonder if folks in Milwaukee can receive KARE 11? I’d love to have my Milwaukee friends tune in. Any plans for a visit to paint stores in the Bay Area? My husband and I are going to Chicago/Wisconsin next week and I’m really looking forward to taking in the colors of Chicago and of course the fall colors in Wisconsin!

Shirley:
The colors are soooo beautiful this time of year in the Midwest. I love all the cornfields in the middle of everywhere with soft mellow yellows. As the wind picks up, you hear them rattle, like wind chimes. I hope to do the Bay really soon, and I will post it on the blog ahead of time. Thanks so much for your comment!
