Searching for the right green!
07/14/2007 07:08 PM by Gretchen Schauffler

I find myself answering color questions all day long. I get lots of emails I wish I could share with you. This one struck me, as a must read. It tells the tale of someone’s search for the perfect feeling in a home, with the largest color you can buy; paint in a gallon. It speaks of the importance of light and color, imagination and emotion.
It is a testimony about how when it is right, it sings, and I am very proud we make that happen everyday. This is what makes our colors Devine!

Hi Gretchen,
For the green I had to go to “anonymous brand” – fernwood green. I love your colors. And they tend to be very strong and rich. I live in a very small house – tiny square rooms with low ceilings. So many of your colors can overwhelm this house. It would be great if you had a line of sand-washed colors for example, paler and gentler colors for very small living spaces. I am very sensitive and strong colors in a small space – I feel the walls closing in on me. Whereas, light colors- it expands the room. Your desert colors work. But if I want a green or a blue or a red or yellow – all your colors are too rich and dark.
My 2 cents. I love your line and I was sorry to have to go to another company.
best,

Dear “Anonymous”:
Thanks so much for the email and your support. You are right about our colors being rich. They mimic nature’s warmth and richness.
The range of light to dark is very specific in this line. If 1=white and 10=black, you will find a balance of numbers in every color family that creates harmony with out monotony and contrast without conflict. Greens and blue-greens, such as Devine Glass, Fescue, Blade, and Reflection, all fall in the 2-3 category depending on the wall finish you use.
Our paint finishes, such as our Delicate Wall Finish, produce different levels of light refraction. This creates different depth levels of color, just like fabric.
Send pictures!

Hi Gretchen,
I painted one wall the “anonymous brand” fernwood green and hated it. It did not look good in artificial light. It looked lime green. Also I have textured walls, and it did not look the same as on the smooth walls in their pictures. And the smell – I couldn’t tolerate it.
So, I went back to Devine and painted my living room in Manzanita. I love it. It’s a little darker than I would have liked but I didn’t want the paler colors you mentioned in your line. I love your paint. It is more fun to paint with because it is thicker. It looks great (and different) in all lighting – natural and artificial. And it looks great on textured walls. My life is so enriched having these painted walls.
Thanks for explaining how your color line works 1-10. I’ll keep that in mind for the future.
So I have shimmer in my bedroom, plantain in my office, manzanita in my living room, and clay in my breakfast nook. Tiny house. 700 square feet. I feel completely different in each room.
Thanks for making my life brighter! Once I have a camera, I’ll send you pictures.
kind regards,

ok, Gretchen. It looks fine. Thanks for sending it to me.
Still loving the colors! I forgot to mention, I originally decided to paint my walls on the recommendation of a feng shui consultant. I was depressed and she said white walls and white carpet add to/fuel depression. Since that time of consultation, I moved residences. So now I have lovely hardwood floors and area rugs. I noticed once I painted the white walls, with the colors that felt good to me in my body, my mood totally lifted.
ps. you can print that too if you want.
all the best,
“Anonymous”
