Time is on your side

I once had a clock on my wall that drove people crazy. The clock was unintentionally defective, always either ahead or behind. Some noticed, and some—those who’s clocks keep “perfect time”—felt the need to correct it and me, warning of the “potential dangers” that result from not knowing the “time of day.”
I didn’t need a clock then to keep perfect PST, just like I don’t need one now, just like I don’t need wake-up calls from my mother (any more!). This clock and its story still serve me as a reminder that time is largely irrelevant when you’re doing what you love. What did I care if my clock was 12 minutes and 42 seconds off the pace of the world? That sort of accuracy only matters when you’re doing what I like to call “punching the clock.” It’s my philosophy that time, “punched” or not, flies if you’re doing what you love. I love spending time with my husband, my kids, or friends, and of course working with color. Fortunately for me, when I work, when I “punch the clock,” I’m also doing what I love. Not everyone’s so blessed.
I have a friend and ex-employee, Nani Stuckman, who loves to travel (outside the friendly confines of the punched clock!). The picture above is one of many perfect moments that she found in Africa, and speaks volumes about how she makes time to find the familiar in the unfamiliar (and visa versa!). For those of you who share a passion for color, and spend countless hours, minutes, and days of un-punched-time in pursuit of what I like to call “perfect color,” I have a special picture (which was sent to me). It speaks volumes about taking the time to put color in its place, and finding your place in color. Perfect color makes time fly beautifully, and makes every moment—in and outside of the punched-clock—sing! Needless to say, I don’t have a clock in my house, but yes, I do have a wrist-watch.
For this look try Devine Cocoa, Mocha or Truffle as a ceiling color, along your choice of neutral walls. (In this case I believe it’s Devine Pecan).

Wow…a little synchronicity. And, I apologize for the accidental time pun.
I just painted the ceiling in my bedroom Medallion, and my walls are glass. I love it.

I just ordered your color palette and it’s great.
We’re moving into a 1 bedroom pre-war apartment. It has dark blonde parquet floors, decent light and views of trees outside. Otherwise we’re starting from the ground up!
For the kitchen I am drawn to dark brown/cherry colored cabinets, and I’m trying to decide on color for the countertop, walls and floor. I’m drawn to a dark black w/ white vein or dark green/black countertop. What colors would look great on the wall in the kitchen? Also, what are some wall colors that can create “flow” between the kitchen, livingroom and bedroom? Generally I’m attracted to light blue, bluegreen, sage, gold, and browns. I want the apt to have some feeling of continuity between the rooms… Thanks!

Julie, the flow you want is what we are all about: Color Coordinated Living, by taking colors you love and colors you have and turning them into a personal rainbow. Take a look at each of our Devine Color Palette pages (colors I created to do this exact thing) with the color of wood, and fabrics in your home. You will see that in each page, certain colors will “jump out” and others will recede. Those that jump out embrace the colors that exist. By doing this, you will have a fabulous range of neutrals and color to choose from. If you need a little help sorting it out, we have DevineCustom, ready to send a colorist out to help you.

Hi Gretchen, I just emailed you about trying to pull this off in my NE PDX dining room. We have gumwood trim (med tone/warm/honey) and wood floors that are very similar. Do you think I can pull this look off? I’m thinking maybe Truffle on the ceiling and Maple on the walls? Any other suggestions? (We have one very large window that gets northern exposure and two large windows that get eastern exposure). Lots of gumwood trim!! I am really open to totally new ideas. Thanks!

Sounds beautiful! If you can send us pictures, please do! Devine Mocha is an amazing color that loves to make walls and natural surfaces beautiful. It would certainly pop the white molding. You can also take a look at Devine Sumatra, Devine Hazelnut, or Roast. The later green tones may really look great with the red of the Cherry. In our new ‘Green’ colors try devinegreen: Persian, Lion, or Elephant. All those windows are drawing in lots of cool light, so your instincts are right to stay warm and cozy!
